And\u00a0now today&#8217;s Subject Matter Minute.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, hey, hey! Welcome to the first episode of the\u00a0subject matter minute, thanks for joining\u00a0me&#8230; honestly, thank you. It&#8217;s not only the\u00a0first episode of the show, it&#8217;s the first\u00a0time I&#8217;ve ever done a video blog so I&#8217;m\u00a0hoping you&#8217;ll bear with me. Be nice in the comments. I\u00a0assume I&#8217;ll get better over time. One of the ideas is that I&#8217;m going to\u00a0try to edit as little as possible. So I&#8217;m\u00a0going to try to get through the stuff\u00a0fairly smoothly. I&#8217;m assuming that I&#8217;ll\u00a0have a hard time, there\u00a0will be some slip-ups, but it should\u00a0get better and\u00a0we&#8217;ll see how it goes. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Alright, so there&#8217;s two reasons I&#8217;m doing\u00a0this video blog. One is that in the three\u00a0years that I&#8217;ve worked for the state&#8230; (I\u00a0have 15 years service but a bunch of\u00a0that was university employment) so in the\u00a0three years that I&#8217;ve worked for the\u00a0state I\u00a0keep coming across these little\u00a0things, like benefits or\u00a0processes that I didn&#8217;t know about or\u00a0don&#8217;t know how to do, and I&#8217;ve got to assume\u00a0that if I don&#8217;t know about it\u00a0other people don&#8217;t as well. So, I\u00a0thought\u00a0this might be a cool way to get that\u00a0information out.<\/p>\n<p>The second reason is\u00a0this is a lot like presenting or public\u00a0speaking and so I took it upon myself as\u00a0a challenge to improve myself in those\u00a0areas. I\u00a0know I&#8217;m just talking to a\u00a0little camera, but in reality I&#8217;m talking\u00a0to an audience so there&#8217;s some of the\u00a0same stuff. You know? Alright. So those are the two reasons.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m\u00a0going to try to do this as a weekly show, <strong>(this has since been changed to monthly)<\/strong> \u00a0and that&#8217;s going to partly\u00a0depend on the subject matter experts out\u00a0there getting me the information. Now I&#8217;m going to kind of give you a call\u00a0to action, ok, because the stuff that&#8217;s most\u00a0important is the stuff that&#8217;s on your\u00a0mind. So if you guys have something\u00a0that you\u00a0can help with, something that you do that\u00a0would help other employees, or if you\u00a0have questions or you know of a topic\u00a0that would help employees across the\u00a0state&#8230; if you could email me or put it in\u00a0the comments, I would truly appreciate it. As many of you might know, I\u00a0stream trainings and courses and\u00a0meetings sometimes. There was this\u00a0one, probably about retirement or\u00a0something, and I\u00a0was working, so I wasn&#8217;t\u00a0really listening, but I suddenly heard\u00a0something that made my ears\u00a0perk up and realized that it might have\u00a0something to do with me. So I\u00a0watch the video\u00a0afterwards and thought,\u00a0what is this\u00a0longevity pay thing, and am I getting\u00a0it? Longevity pay\u00a0is rewards for people\u00a0who stick with the state, for those who\u00a0work with state for a long time. So\u00a0specifically, after five year blocks you\u00a0get an extra forty dollars a month to\u00a0your check. After five years of service you&#8217;re\u00a0getting forty dollars a month added to\u00a0your check. After 10 years you&#8217;re getting\u00a0eighty dollars a month added to your\u00a0check. After 15 years, a hundred and twenty\u00a0dollars a month added to\u00a0your check, and so\u00a0on. It&#8217;s a really nice benefit and\u00a0it&#8217;s automatic. That was the other thing&#8230; I&#8217;m\u00a0glad it was automatic cause\u00a0if I\u00a0had to\u00a0fill out paperwork for it I\u00a0would have\u00a0never known and probably never have\u00a0gotten it.<\/p>\n<p>So how\u00a0do you know if you&#8217;re getting it? Well, first of all, it&#8217;s automatic. So if you&#8217;re past those milestones then you are getting it. But you can also look on\u00a0your pay advise. In the upper left-hand\u00a0corner it&#8217;ll say &#8220;long,&#8221; (that&#8217;s the abbreviation for\u00a0longevity) and should have a dollar amount after it. You can also look at it in your ESS\u00a0system. Right below your base salary, there&#8217;s one for long and it&#8217;ll show\u00a0you how much you got.<\/p>\n<p>When I found out about my longevity pay, it\u00a0wasn&#8217;t like I suddenly was making a\u00a0hundred and twenty dollars extra month\u00a0because it had automatically started, but it\u00a0was really nice to know and I think it&#8217;s\u00a0a great benefit.<\/p>\n<p>So you&#8217;ve made it\u00a0through episode 1 of the Subject Matter Minute.
